Only Christ is Worthy

Revelation 5:1-7

Please read your Bible text: Rev 5:1-7

The vision of the glorified Jesus (in chapter 1) introduces the seven churches. The vision of the heavenly throne (in chapter 4) presents the Seven Seals. Each of these seven seals, apparently to lock up the scroll written on both sides. As each seal is broken – an event will follow. But no one, except Jesus, is worthy to break these seals. From henceforth, as each seal is being cut one by one – the divine purposes is unleashed, and John will be writing as he is being shown – the things or the events that are to come. These things or events that John wrote are taking place TODAY, in our generations – in a much clearer understanding than in the past generations, a few centuries ago.

Jesus is worthy to unleash something good in your life – vv.1-5

The scroll sealed with seven seals indicates that God had it locked up or concealed away. Thus, the content written therein remains a mystery unless someone is worthy of breaking the seals. The content may well be the successive stages of end-times events ushering in the final consummation of the Kingdom of God. For the ascended Jesus to be worthy to break the seals would undoubtedly mean that only He alone knew the content therein. He knows the future for He is the first and the last. Is there an area in your life that remains closed, a mystery? The Lord Jesus is worthy to break that seal and unlock a new beginning in your life.

John wept for no one is worthy of breaking the seals. We do not have to weep because the future is unknown for, we know the unknown is known to Him. He holds the future in His hands. May this be a reassuring comfort to those who are fearful of the unknown future. The Lord will perfect that which concerns you! (Psa. 138:8). The Lord, who does not slumber, watches over you and hold you by the hand.

Jesus is worthy for He is both the Lion and the Lamb – vv.5, 6-7.

John wept for no one is worthy to break the seals of the scroll. The scroll is a written program that will end the age of earthly history in which we live. The breaking of its seals would begin the countdown. The present evil age must close before the age to come can open.  That is why John wept in frustration and grief because no one was worthy to break the seal to set in motion the countdown. No one was found worthy except the One John saw as the Lion and the Lamb. The Lord Jesus is both the sacrificial Lamb and the sovereign Lion, and He is the One John saw as being worthy to break the seals.

Notice on that Lamb, there are seven horns which speak of perfect power and authority. There are also seven eyes, indicating comprehensive insight or wisdom. Notice that these eyes are the sevenfold spirits of God denoting omniscience and omnipresence, respectively.

As the Lamb of God (v.6b), Jesus is my sacrifice for sins. He died in my stead that I may be freed from the penalty of sins. As the Lion of Judah (v.5), He is the coming King to rule the earth.

Think: Jesus is worthy to break the seal of my life to unleash a new beginning!

Prayer: You are worthy O Lord, to receive all glory, and honor, and power. For you have created all things and You are the Giver of all life.
