The Divine Monogram – He is the Alpha & Omega
I am thrilled to note that Jesus Christ Himself, who began the book of Revelation in 1:8, now closes it and uses Himself the Divine Monogram of the Alpha and Omega (22:6). As if to assure John that all that he had seen and heard is indeed the Truth and is trustworthy (v.6). The book of Revelation was written to be understood plainly, for it was written with ordinary folks down the street in mind; the majority were not highly educated in those days of the early church. It is the so-called discipline of theology in Bible schools and today’s liturgical churches that have made it so complicated.
The Declaration – A Warning and a Blessing
Indeed, the Words of the Lord are so trustworthy and true that a divine warning and blessings are attached to them. First, there is a warning to anyone who would distort or corrupt the Word by adding or subtracting the Truth therein (vv.18-19). Second, there is a blessing to those who read and keep the prophetic words in this book (v.7).
The Authenticator – He is the Root of David and the Bright and Morning Star
Notice the Lord’s repeated authentication as the author (v.16) – only now with the combination of His various titles — the Root and Offspring of David, the bright and morning star. By the Root and Offspring of David, the Lord identifies with the Jewish people; the Bright and Morning Star identifies with the universal church. Make no mistake about it that the words therein in the Revelation are authenticated by the Lord, Himself.
The Certain Promise – He is sure to Return
The One who is the focus of the book of Revelation has said that He is coming back soon. Four times the Lord repeated that He is coming soon (vv.7, 12, 17, and 20). The appeal in v.17 is to our Lord to come quickly, and it is answered in v.20. In no uncertain terms, Jesus Himself declared that He is coming soon.
Think: Jesus is returning soon.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, let this thought of your soon returning be imbued into the core of my soul and spirit that I may keep myself ready at the ‘outpost’ of my life.
