When the Call Comes Through the Fire

Devotional Thoughts for Christians***

“After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” (Genesis 22:1 – ESV)

There are moments in the journey of faith when God calls our name—not in comfort, but in testing. Abraham had already walked long with God, and now he was asked to surrender the very promise God had fulfilled—the miracle son, Isaac. After these things, after the waiting, the believing, and the fulfillment, the test came. Not before growth, but because of it.

God’s tests are never random. They are precise, intentional, and proportionate to the faith He has already formed in us. He does not place the weight of deep trials on undeveloped strength. Instead, He trains, stretches, and then entrusts. Abraham’s trial was extremely difficult because Abraham’s faith had grown strong.

As we mature in Christ, we may expect peace—but often, we encounter greater challenges. Not because God has withdrawn His favor, but because He is deepening it. The path does not necessarily grow easier; it grows more purposeful. Like a soldier entrusted with greater responsibility, or a ship built stronger for rougher seas, we are sent forward—not backward.

Even in seasons where rest seems deserved, the call may come again. Abraham, in his old age, might have expected quiet days. Instead, he heard God’s voice calling him into his greatest test. This reminds us that until our journey is complete, we remain in the field of faith—watching, trusting, surrendering.

There may come a moment near the end of a long season when the struggle feels most intense. Often, the hardest fight rises at the final stretch, as opposition presses in with greater force. Yet even there, God sustains His people and proves their faith steadfast.

Pause for Reflection

Where might God be calling your name today—in a place that feels like a test rather than a blessing? Can you respond, like Abraham, “Here I am,” even when you don’t understand?

Trials are not signs of abandonment; they are often invitations to deeper trust. The final battles may feel the fiercest, but they also reveal the strength God has built within you. Hold steady. He knows what He is doing.

Parting Thought:

The depth of your trial often reflects the depth of your calling. God trusts you more than you realize.

Prayer:

Father God, when You call my name in difficult places, help me to answer with willing faith. Strengthen me for the trials that stretch me, and remind me that You are shaping me through every challenge. Teach me to trust You not only in blessing but also in testing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

As I read this, I feel like the Lord is gently telling me that not every calling will first feel like a blessing—sometimes it will feel like a test 🔥.
As a wife, mother, and healthcare professional, I can honestly declare that there are times when I find it difficult to fulfil God’s requests. It is exhausting. It has a stretching sensation. I feel as though I’m entering an unclear area. But I know deep down that doesn’t mean He’s not there. Indeed, it may be the precise location where He is most prevalent. Because I’ve realised that God frequently meets us most plainly in the “fire,” not outside of it. I pray more, rely more, and cling more during those trying times when I feel stretched. And that’s where my faith becomes real—it’s something I live and breathe every day, not just something I learned as a young Catholic.
🙏 “Here I am,” despite the difficulties To be honest, when things are nice, it’s simple to say, “Here I am, Lord.” Saying it when I don’t comprehend, though? When I have to pay for it? True surrender enters the picture at this point. Like Abraham, I’m discovering that obedience is more about trust than clarity. Have faith that God already sees the whole picture, even if I don’t. Thus, yes. I want to answer, “Here I am,” not because I’m strong, but because I know He is.
🔥 Trials are an invitation rather than a sign of abandonment. I was really moved by this portion. Because I sometimes feel like I am running on empty as someone who contributes so much to patients, family, and everyone around me. And it’s easy to wonder, “Lord, why this again?” when difficulties arise. However, this serves as a reminder that the fire is there to refine me rather than destroy me. It makes my heart visible and brings me nearer to Him ✨.
It fortifies a faith that is difficult to dispel. Our faith is enhanced, not weakened, by adversity, just as gold is cleansed by fire.
❤️‍🩹Remaining steadfast in faith “He knows what He is doing” is a statement that… I find serenity there. Even when the season is severe and the “battle” seems overwhelming,
I tell myself: 👉 From the beginning, God sees the end. He has never abandoned me before, and he won’t do so now. Every hardship is moulding me into something lovely. I so decide to remain stable today. It’s not because life is simple, but rather because my God is dependable.
✨ “Lord, even in the fire, I will say ‘Here I am’—because I trust that You are not testing me to break me, but to draw me closer to You” sums up your heart💝🔥
