Devotional Thoughts for Christians***
And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’—Acts 2:21 (NIV)
How can salvation be so near? How can eternal life come through something as simple as a cry for mercy?
Because God has already moved toward humanity.
Long before sinners ever called upon Him, God promised through the Book of Joel, “I will pour forth my Spirit upon all flesh.” The miracle of salvation begins not with man searching for God, but with God drawing near through His Holy Spirit.
This is the wonder of grace: the Spirit of God is not distant from the sinner. He hovers near, awakening hearts, stirring conviction, opening blind eyes, and revealing Christ. Just as the Spirit moved upon the dark waters at creation, He moves upon human souls to bring new life out of spiritual darkness.
Without the Holy Spirit, preaching is only words. But when the Spirit accompanies the gospel, even the faintest cry of faith becomes the doorway to salvation.
A sinner may know almost nothing; theology cannot explain redemption, cannot recite doctrine, cannot clean himself up first. Yet if from the depths of his soul he whispers, “Lord, save me,” heaven responds immediately. Why? Because the Spirit has already drawn near.
The gospel is not about climbing into heaven to bring Christ down. The Word is near. The Spirit is near. Christ is ready to save.
The Holy Spirit’s work is like sunlight pouring into a darkened room. A shutter opens slightly, and light rushes in instantly, chasing shadows from every corner. So it is when a heart opens even a little toward God. The Spirit enters with convicting power, producing repentance, awakening faith, and beginning the miracle of the new birth.
Salvation is not achieved by human striving. It is birthed by the Spirit of God working through a surrendered cry.
Pause to Reflect:
Have you been treating God as distant when His Spirit is already drawing near to you? What simple cry of surrender or faith is He waiting to hear from your heart today?
Parting Thought:
The smallest genuine cry to Christ reaches the ears of God because the Holy Spirit is already near, ready to bring the life of Jesus into the soul that opens to Him.
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank You for drawing near to me even before I knew how desperately I needed You. Thank You for opening my eyes to Christ and awakening faith within my heart. Let me never forget that salvation is Your gracious work from beginning to end. Convict, cleanse, renew, and fill me daily with the life of Jesus. And help me to share the gospel, believing that You are already moving in the hearts of those who hear. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
