Devotional Thoughts for Christians***
Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies.
Numbers 14:42 (NIV).
There is a sobering lesson hidden in Israel’s tragedy at Kadesh Barnea. God had instructed them to enter the Promised Land, but when fear gripped their hearts, they refused to obey. Because of their unbelief, the Lord declared that they would wander in the wilderness. Then, realizing their mistake, the people suddenly decided to go up and fight after all. Their intention seemed noble. They acknowledged their sin and were willing to advance. Yet Moses warned them, “Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you.”
What a solemn truth. It was not enough that the command had once been given. The situation had changed. God’s dealings with them had moved to a different chapter. Their mistake was not merely disobedience—it was assuming they could return to yesterday’s instruction while ignoring God’s present word. They tried to act as though nothing had changed, but everything had. As a result, they went forward without God’s presence and met painful defeat.
This remains a vital lesson for believers today. It is possible to cling stubbornly to a direction, plan, ministry, or ambition that God once gave while failing to discern what He is saying now. Spiritual life is not sustained by yesterday’s guidance alone. The secret of victory is not merely having received a word from God at some point in the past but walking in living fellowship with Him today. What mattered most was not the command itself, but the God who gave it.
Even Moses experienced this reality. His journey was redirected when he failed to honor God at the waters of Meribah. Yet unlike the rebellious Israelites, Moses bowed to God’s present will. Though he did not enter Canaan, he remained a beloved servant of the Lord and was blessed in God’s purpose. Submission brought peace; resistance brought sorrow.
Sometimes we discover that our own stubbornness, pride, fear, or self-will has altered the course God intended for us. When that happens, the answer is not to force our way forward. The answer is humble surrender. God’s adjustments are never meant to destroy us but to restore us. If He closes one door, it is because He sees a better path ahead. His delays are not denials; His corrections are expressions of His fatherly love.
The safest place for a child of God is not in yesterday’s success or yesterday’s revelation but in today’s obedience. We need not fear His corrections if our hearts remain yielded. The God who redirects is also the God who restores. In His time, He will fulfill every purpose He has ordained for our lives.
Pause to Reflect:
The greatest danger is not missing yesterday’s opportunity but refusing today’s direction. God’s guidance is not merely a map to be followed but a relationship to be maintained. Blessed are those who hold loosely to their own plans and firmly to the hand of God.
Parting Thought:
A past word from God is precious, but a present walk with God is indispensable. Victory belongs not to those who remember what God once said, but to those who are listening to what He is saying today.
Prayer:
Father God, keep my heart tender and responsive to Your voice. Deliver me from clinging to my own plans or relying solely on yesterday’s guidance. Teach me to walk closely with You each day and to welcome Your corrections with humility. Grant me grace to trust Your adjustments, knowing that Your purposes are always good. Lead me in Your present will, and restore whatever needs restoring in Your perfect time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
