Bearing God’s Presence in Deep Waters

Devotional Thoughts for Christians***

“The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.”
(Joshua 3:17 – NIV)

The priests who carried the ark were not merely crossing the Jordan; they were carrying the very symbol of God’s presence into the deepest part of the river. While others walked toward their inheritance, these men remained in the place of greatest responsibility. They stood firm until every person had safely crossed. Not one was left behind.

This scene reminds us that God often calls His servants to stand in difficult places for the benefit of others.

Faith is not always about moving forward quickly. Sometimes faith is remaining where God has placed us, trusting Him amid uncertainty, hardship, or sacrifice. The priests could not abandon their post halfway through the crossing. Their steadfastness was essential to the miracle.

Many believers are called to bear God’s presence into deep waters—into places of pain, loss, spiritual battle, or persistent prayer.

Parents intercede for children.
Pastors shepherd weary hearts.
Friends encourage those who are struggling.
Faithful servants remain at their assignment, holding fast to the Lord so that others may find their way into God’s promises.

The power was not in the priests themselves; it was in the presence of God symbolized by the ark. Yet God chose to work through their obedience. As they stood where He commanded, the waters remained held back, and the people passed through safely. In the same way, God still works through willing hearts that trust Him enough to stand firm when the task is difficult.

When the waters seem deep around you, remember that God’s presence is greater than the river before you. The Lord is looking for men and women who will faithfully carry His presence into challenging places and remain there until His work is complete.

Pause for Reflection:

Am I willing to stand where God has placed me, even when the assignment is difficult?
Who might be encouraged, strengthened, or blessed because I remain faithful to the Lord?

Parting Thought:

The nation entered its inheritance because a handful of priests were willing to bear God’s presence in deep waters. Often, the greatest acts of faith are not found in moving ahead but in standing firm until others safely reach God’s promises.

Prayer:

Father God, thank You for Your faithful presence in every season of life. Give me the courage to stand where You call me, even when the waters are deep and the cost is great. Help me to carry Your presence with humility, faith, and perseverance. Use my life to encourage others and to help them walk into the fullness of Your promises. May I remain faithful until the work You have given me is complete. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Lord, I am willing to stand where You’ve placed me, even when the assignment is tough, because I know You never call me to a place without first going before me.
As a wife, mother, healthcare professional, leader, student, and servant in Your Church, sometimes the responsibilities are heavy and the waters seem deep. Still, I choose to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus instead of the waves, trusting that each home visit, care recipient I serve, conversation, challenge, and hidden sacrifice is an opportunity to bear Your presence. I know You did not put me here to carry these burdens alone, but to show Your strength, love, and faithfulness through my weakness. If I am faithful, I pray my husband and children will be encouraged to love and trust You more deeply, my care recipients and their families will experience Your compassion through my hands and heart, my colleagues and those I supervise will be strengthened to serve with excellence and kindness, and those walking with me in ministry will be inspired to persevere in their own faith. I want my life points to be given not to me but to Christ. If only one person comes to know Your love because I am faithful where You have placed me, then every hard assignment, every sacrifice, every walk through the deep waters will have been worth it, for Your presence is always greater than the storms I face. 🙏✝️💝
