Devotional Thoughts for Christians***
“Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’” — John 3:3 (NIV)
Many believers have not fully understood this foundational truth of the Christian faith—to be born again.
Often, when someone comes to Christ, we immediately teach them what they should and should not do. As a result, when asked what has changed since becoming a Christian, many speak mainly about their behavior, habits, or performance. Christianity then becomes a list of duties and expectations. Over time, the joy that once filled their hearts begins to fade, and the Christian life feels burdensome.
But this is not the picture Scripture presents.
When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus, He was not talking about outward improvement. Nicodemus understood Jesus’ words on a physical level, wondering how a grown man could enter his mother’s womb a second time. Yet Jesus was speaking of something far deeper—the spirit.
The fundamental change that occurs when a person comes to Christ is not an external modification but an internal transformation. It is a new birth. The spirit that was once dead toward God is made alive by the Holy Spirit. A new life begins from within.
This new birth is so profound that the Apostle Paul describes it as becoming an entirely new creation. He writes, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV). God does not merely repair the old life or make a few adjustments to our character. He imparts new life in Christ. At the deepest level of our being, we become new creations, united with Christ and indwelt by His Spirit. This is the foundation of Christian living—not self-reformation, but a new creation living out the life of Christ from within.
This is why Christianity is not primarily about trying harder but about living from a new nature. The born-again believer possesses the very life of Christ within. As we learn to walk in fellowship with Him, that spiritual life naturally flows outward, influencing our thoughts, desires, words, and actions.
The Christian life was never meant to be sustained by human effort alone. It is the overflow of divine life. Just as a healthy tree naturally bears fruit, a regenerated spirit naturally bears fruit that glorifies God.
When we understand that we have been born again, our focus shifts from merely changing our behavior to abiding in Christ. Then His life rises within us and overwhelms the limitations of the flesh. What once felt like a burden becomes a joyful expression of the life He has placed within us.
The kingdom of God is not entered by self-improvement but by new birth. And from that new birth flows a life that reflects the glory of the One who gave it.
Pause to Reflect:
Am I measuring my Christian life primarily by my performance, or am I living from the reality that I have been born again and made alive in Christ?
Parting Thought:
God did not merely give you a new set of rules to follow; He gave you a new life to live. The Christian life is not the improvement of the old self but the expression of Christ’s life within you.
Prayer:
Father God, thank You for the miracle of being born again. Open my eyes to see that my relationship with You is founded not on outward performance but on the new life You have placed within me through Christ. Teach me to walk by the Spirit and to trust Your life working in me. May the reality of my new birth transform the way I live each day so that Your love, grace, and glory may flow naturally through my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
