The Blessing That Must Not Be Blocked

Devotional Thoughts for Christians***

“Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me…’ And God granted his request.” — 1 Chronicles 4:10 (NIV)

Here is a glimpse into Jabez’s prayer. It is not selfish to pray, “God bless me,” for God granted his request.

There is something refreshingly honest about Jabez’s prayer. He did not hesitate to ask God for blessings. He did not apologize for it, nor did he disguise his desire beneath religious language. He simply cried out, “Oh, that You would bless me!”

Many believers quietly assume that seeking God’s blessing is somehow selfish. Yet Scripture presents a different picture. A life under God’s favor is not an exception reserved for a select few; it is meant to be the normal experience of those who walk with Him. Our Heavenly Father delights in blessing His children.

The greater concern is not whether God desires to bless us, but whether anything in us is hindering the flow of that blessing. When God’s favor seems absent, the answer is not always found in outward circumstances. Often, the Lord gently searches our hearts.

It is possible to be completely right in an argument and still miss God’s blessing. We may defend our actions, justify our words, and prove our position beyond question. Yet if our correctness is accompanied by pride, harshness, or a lack of love, what have we truly gained?

In God’s work and in our daily lives, success is not measured merely by being right. The ultimate measure is whether God’s hand rests upon what we say and do. His blessing is worth more than winning every debate and proving every point.

When our hearts are set on enjoying God’s favor, we become careful about our speech, our attitudes, and our conduct. We learn that the central question is not, “Am I right?” but rather, “Is the blessing of God upon this?”

May we seek not only truth in our actions but also the fragrance of Christ that invites God’s approval. For where His blessing rests, there is fruitfulness, peace, and lasting value.

Pause to Reflect:

Am I more concerned with being right than with preserving God’s blessing on my life and relationships?
Is there any attitude, word, or action that may be obstructing the flow of God’s favor?
Do I daily ask God to bless my life so that I may become a channel of blessing to others?

Parting Thought:

Being right may win an argument, but only God’s blessing produces eternal fruit. Never sacrifice His favor on the altar of personal correctness.

Prayer:

Father God, thank You that You are a God who delights to bless Your children. Like Jabez, I come before You and ask for Your blessing upon my life. Search my heart and reveal anything that hinders the flow of Your favor. Guard me from pride, self-justification, and the desire to prove myself right at all costs. Teach me to value Your blessing above personal victory, and let my words, actions, and attitudes bring You pleasure. May Your hand rest upon me, and may my life become a channel through which Your grace and blessing flow to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
