When the Hidden Fear Finally Falls

Devotional Thoughts for Christians***

Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife, and his female slaves so they could have children again, for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife, Sarah—Genesis 20:17-18 (NIV).

There is something deeply moving about this moment in Abraham’s life. Here is a man who has long carried the burden of an unanswered promise. God had promised him a son, yet year after year, Sarah remained barren. Still, when Abimelek and his household stood in need, Abraham prayed for them.

What faith it takes to ask God to give children to others while still waiting for your own miracle.

And God heard him.

Yet this story is framed by a sobering failure. Abraham had once again resorted to the old half-truth that Sarah was his sister. It seems surprising after the intimate fellowship he had recently enjoyed with God. But Abraham reveals that this arrangement between him and Sarah had existed since their departure from Mesopotamia. Beneath the surface of his faith, a hidden fear had survived for years.

He feared losing Sarah.
He feared that God’s protection might somehow fail.

Though he had walked with God through countless demonstrations of divine faithfulness, this lingering root of unbelief remained buried in his heart.

But God, in His mercy, exposed it.

What Abraham had concealed was brought into the light. The fear that had quietly shaped his actions was finally confronted and defeated. Once that hidden bondage was uncovered, Abraham was freed in a new way. Notice that he did not pray for Sarah’s womb to be opened. He prayed for others.

And then God acted.

Soon afterward, Abraham would have his own son, Isaac, who was conceived.

How often do we ask God to change our circumstances while He is first seeking to expose a fear that has been controlling us? Sometimes the greatest obstacle is not the size of the problem before us but the unbelief hidden within us. God lovingly brings these fears into the light, not to condemn us, but to set us free.

When fear dies, faith breathes more deeply.
When unbelief is surrendered, God’s promises become clearer.
When hidden roots are uprooted, fruit begins to grow.

Pause to Reflect:

What fear or unbelief has quietly crippled your life?
Is there a fear of failure, rejection, loss, disappointment, lack, or the future that continues to influence your decisions?
What hidden concern do you need to bring honestly before God today?
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any lingering fear that has remained beneath the surface and to replace it with deeper trust in God’s faithfulness.

Parting Thought:

The fears we hide often hold us captive. The fears we surrender to God lose their power. What is brought into His light can finally be healed.

Prayer:

Father God, thank You for Your patience with me. Just as You lovingly exposed Abraham’s hidden fear, search my heart and reveal any unbelief that keeps me from fully trusting You. Forgive me for the ways fear has shaped my decisions and limited my faith. Help me rest in the certainty that You are faithful to every promise You have made. Teach me to pray for others with a generous heart, even as I wait for answers of my own. Bring every hidden fear into Your light, and replace it with confidence in Your goodness and care. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
