The Rails of His Purpose

Devotional Thoughts for Christians***

11 Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. 12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded—Isaiah 45:11-12 (KJV).

The God who stretched out the heavens and commands every star is not lacking in power. He is the Creator, the Sovereign One, the Lord of all. Yet in this astonishing passage, He speaks to His people in a way that reveals a profound mystery: He has chosen to involve us in the accomplishment of His purposes. “Command ye me.”

This is not an invitation to boss God around or dictate His will. Rather, it is a revelation that God has voluntarily limited Himself in this present age to work through the partnership of human faith, prayer, and obedience. He who possesses all authority has chosen to honor the free will He gave to mankind.

Before time began, God alone acted. There was no second will to consider. In the ages to come, redeemed humanity will be perfectly united with His heart, and His will shall be done without resistance. But now, in this present age, God works in cooperation with those who freely choose Him.

Jesus echoed this truth when He said, “Ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (John 15:7). The Lord’s power is unlimited, but He often waits for the prayers of His people before releasing what He desires to accomplish on earth.

Imagine a mighty locomotive with immense power. The engine possesses the strength to pull countless tons across vast distances. Yet the locomotive itself does not determine its direction. The rails determine where the train will go.

In a similar way, God has placed extraordinary authority into the hands of His praying people. His power is the engine; our prayers become the rails upon which that power moves in history. Heaven’s resources are vast beyond measure, but God has ordained that much of His work on earth advances through the prayers of His children.

How sobering is this responsibility!

If we neglect prayer, how many blessings remain unreleased? How many souls remain unreached? How many divine purposes await the cooperation of willing hearts?

As Pastor Jack Hayford often summarized: “If we don’t, He won’t.” Not because God lacks ability, but because He has chosen to work through covenant partnership with His people.

The question is not whether God is able. The question is whether we will believe Him enough to ask.

Pause to Reflect:

Where might God be waiting for your participation through prayer? Are there situations, people, ministries, or promises that you have assumed God will handle alone, while He is inviting you to partner with Him through persistent prayer?

Parting Thought:

The God who commands the stars has chosen to work with praying people. His power is unlimited, but He has given us the privilege and responsibility of laying the rails through faith-filled prayer.

Prayer:

Father, I stand in awe that You, the Creator of heaven and earth, invite me into partnership with Your purposes. Forgive me for the times I have failed to pray, doubted Your promises, or neglected the responsibility You have entrusted to me. Teach me to pray with faith, confidence, and perseverance. Align my will with Yours so that Your purposes may be accomplished through my life. May I never underestimate the power of prayer or the privilege of cooperating with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
