The Joy of the Father’s Open Hands

Devotional Thoughts for Christians***

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.’”
Luke 15:22-23 (NIV)

The prodigal son returned home expecting little. He came with a confession prepared, hoping perhaps to be accepted as a servant. His thoughts were filled with his failure, his waste, and his unworthiness.

But the father had other thoughts.

There was no lecture, no accounting of squandered wealth, no demand for explanations. The father seemed almost uninterested in discussing the son’s past. His heart was occupied with something far greater—the joy of giving. Before the son could earn anything, the father clothed him with the best robe. Before he could prove himself, a ring was placed on his finger. Before he could work his way back into favor, sandals were put on his feet, and a feast was prepared in his honor.

This is a beautiful picture of our Father God.

God is not a reluctant giver. He is not a miser guarding His treasures. His delight is to bless His children. His grace flows not because we deserve it but because He delights in giving. His storehouses are full of mercy, forgiveness, wisdom, strength, peace, and love. He rejoices when His children come with open hands and willing hearts to receive from Him.

Very often, we are like the prodigal son before we understand our father’s heart. We approach God cautiously, expecting reproach when He offers grace. Or we become like the elder brother, trying to earn what can only be received. We strive to provide for God through our own strength, forgetting that He is the Giver and we are the receivers.

The father’s sorrow was not that the younger son came home empty-handed. His sorrow would have been great if the son had refused the robe, rejected the ring, and declined the feast. Likewise, it grieves God’s heart when we insist on self-sufficiency and refuse the riches of His grace.

The Christian life begins and continues the same way—by receiving. We receive forgiveness, receive righteousness, receive strength, receive daily grace, and receive the abundance of His love. What brings God joy is not our attempts to enrich Him, but our willingness to let Him enrich us.

Today, come as an applicant for His grace. Open your arms wide. The Father’s hands are already open.

Pause to Reflect:

God’s gifts are not rewards for the worthy but expressions of His fatherly love. Rest today in the truth that your heavenly Father delights in giving far more than you could ever deserve.

Parting Thought:

The prodigal came home seeking a place in the house; the father welcomed him with the treasures of the house. God’s grace always gives more than we dare ask for.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have tried to live by my own strength or earn what You freely give. Teach me to trust Your generous heart, and to receive Your grace with gratitude and humility. Open my eyes to the riches that are mine in Christ, and help me live as a beloved child who rests in Your unfailing love. Amen.

It’s a reminder that it’s all grace, what I have. Every chance to serve, my faith, my family, my calling as a healthcare professional, and even the strength to push through tough days are not things I’ve earned but loving gifts from my Heavenly Father. His open hands are never judged by my performance but by His endless mercy and love. And like Mama Mary, I want to receive His gifts with humility, gratitude, and trust, not taking them for granted or thinking I am entitled to them. So, as I care for others day by day, I pray my own hands will reflect the Father’s open hands—ready to give, forgive, comfort, and serve with joy. Today my rest is not in what I have accomplished but in the loving truth that I am a beloved daughter of God, deeply loved, abundantly blessed, and safely in my Father’s arms. 🙏🏻💝
